Not only is it almost Valentine’s Day but February is also National Heart Month! I know I want all my loved ones to be happy and healthy and that includes having a healthy heart! So before you go giving away your heart this V-Day, let’s find out how to keep them in tip top shape for your sake and theirs!

Your heart beats about 100,000 times per day. To make those beats really count, there are some things you can do to improve your heart health:


Get 30 Minutes of Exercise A Day

It can be anything from cleaning the house, taking a brisk walk with the dog, going for a swim, hike, run, playing a sport, or just playing with kids – anything that keeps your heart rate up! There are so many more health benefits to 30 minutes a day, it is SO worth it!


Lower Your Stress

Stress takes a toll on heart health. Life can get stressful at work, at home, and everywhere in between – but I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that! Take time every day to consciously relax through meditation, self-care, or active relaxation like taking a walk or doing yoga. Studies have shown that petting or cuddling with a dog or cat is also very stress relieving! Practice gratitude for what you have each day and have fun with friends and family to keep that heart happy!


Get Enough Sleep

Poor quality sleep puts you at a significantly increased risk for higher blood pressure. Adults should be getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Make some adjustments and experiment with what works for you each night if you have trouble hitting this mark. Seriously, sleep is very important for all aspects of your health, but this is a big reason!


Eat Your Veggies

Yes OK this is sort of my motto. But plant-based diets have been shown to be extremely beneficial for heart health! Also watch your sodium and sugar intake – you want to minimize these as much as possible for optimal heart benefits.
