A few years ago I discovered that consuming apples, peaches, plums and pears gives me an allergic reaction. This was sad news for me, a New England girl, since I do love my apples and summer stone fruits! But it also explained why earlier that year when I tried a 3-day juice cleanse I felt worse instead of better – because most green juices (and juice in general) contain apple!
And how come so many green juices contain apple? Well, apples are a great filler (they give lots of juice) and are nicely sweet to go with all the green veggies that don’t have such an appealing flavor to most palates. I personally always use at least one part fruit in my green juice to balance out any earthy or too-vegetable-y taste from the veggies. So what was I supposed to do now that I couldn’t use apples, peaches, plums or pears?!
Honestly, it has been tough to find green juice recipes that don’t include apple! However I have found a few and have determined my favorite fruit replacements for my green juices!
Sweet additions to replace the apple in your green juice:
- Grapefruit (not sweet but a sweet/sour flavor which is interesting!)
- Clementines/mandarins/other citrus
- Honeydew Melon
- Veggies like beets or carrots are naturally sweeter and also help with the flavor of juices!
Juice one of those fruits with two or more of these veggies to make yourself a yummy healthy juice!
- Romaine or leaf lettuce
- Herbs like mint, parsley, basil, cilantro
- Ginger, turmeric
In case you need proof, here are some recipes from around the web that prove you don’t need apples to enjoy a delicious green juice!
